Being able to play on platforms is becoming more and more popular. Huge game developers and indie developers alike are working hard to bring cross-play features to their games. As for 7 days of death, cross-play capabilities were the number one priority. The Fun Pimps pushed the changes for this update just before Christmas 2024, much to the delight of fans.

It's also important to note that if you're playing on a PC, your game files must be unmodified for the cross-play features to work. The two main options for crossplay are session hosting and join sessions. Follow the guides below to set up these features for yourself.
How to host a session
When you start the game and select either Continue Game or New Game, you'll see a handful of settings on the right side of the screen. It doesn't matter if you're setting up a new game or continuing an old save file, the process of hosting a session works the same way.
The first option is Server Enabled. In order to host a session, you will need to switch this setting to online. Once this has been enabled, you will be able to switch to the other settings in the list. The next one you will want to change is the Server Visibility. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, it is not possible to use the cross-play features if your Server Visibility is set to friends. Instead, you'll need to set this option to public. You can set a password for your session. to prevent random people from participating. That said, at the time of writing there are some limitations on joining random players.
After the Server Visibility is set to Public, you will need to enable Crossplay Enabled. Once you've done this, you'll need to make sure the Max Players option is set to 8 or below. At the time of writing, it is not possible to host a session larger than this. Doing so will prevent friends from finding your world. Once you've done this, you can upload your world and friends. they should be able to join you.
How to join a session
Attending a session is much simpler than hosting one. When loading the game, select Join A Game. From here, you'll need to enter the player tag of the person you're trying to join.
After entering the person's name, tap Start Search. Provided the name is correct, their name will appear and you will be able to connect to their server. If your friend has put a password on the server, then you'll need to make sure you have it or you won't be able to join. Once you arrive, you can start exploring, looting and killing enemies together with your friends.
Crossplay Limitations
Unfortunately, there are some limitations around the cross-play features available in 7 days to die. The biggest is the lack of dedicated servers. According to the patch notes of the update, dedicated servers are being worked on, but for now crossplay only works in peer-to-peer games. Dedicated servers will launch with the game's next big update; Storms brewing.
There are also limits on world sizes and the number of players. The more players on a given server, the greater the risk of performance issues. The better your system or console, the smoother the game.
The maximum world size at the time of writing is 8192. This is still a pretty respectable map size. But some players will want the ability to play on larger maps in the future. It is unclear if the developers will increase the map size limit for crossplay going forward.
Another thing worth noting is that the maximum number of players supported for crossplay is 8. Although there are some players who want more, 8 players is still a respectable number. It is unclear if this number will be increased by Fun Pimps in the future. Also, for those on PC, it is not possible to host modified worlds. It is important to remove or disable any mods before setting up a cross-play session.
Unfortunately, not everyone can access the cross-play features at this time. Those playing on the Japanese PS5 version of the game cannot yet play with friends on different consoles. This is set to change soon, but no specific date has been set. The only thing that is known about this is that this problem should be solved at the beginning of this year.
Other Noteworthy Features Update 1.2
7 days to die update 1.2 introduced a number of useful bug fixes and improvements, some of which were made to make cross-play easier. An issue prior to this update was that players on Xbox and PS5 could not find their friends in the server browser. This has now been resolved.
There is now a block list that can be found in the settings menu. This is a much needed feature as it allows players to block any cheater or toxic player by being able to keep track of their names to prevent them from joining again. Unfortunately, cheating and pain are things that happen in almost every online game. Being able to have an active blocklist helps keep these players away.
There were also some new graphics options that give players more control over the game's performance. This is great for those playing on systems that might struggle to host a cross-play session with overclocked graphics. Alternatively, those playing on high-end systems can now increase the overall graphics quality to incredible levels.
Another thing to note is that the game now has better blood disposition scaling. This is perfect for those playing with friends, as it means that the number of enemies and the overall difficulty of the enemies that appear will be more suited to the skill and level of play of the players in the session.
