How to solve the open hand temple crimes

Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3 it has a lot of crime in place, more than the previous two acts combined, and a lot of blame being pushed around. From the moment the player begins Act 3, tensions will be high at all times, with a city threatening to fall apart and an overbearing robotic police force policing the populace. To make matters worse, a beloved local religious leader has been killed in what appears to be a murder-suicide by a refugee he was supporting and protecting—at least, that's the theory going around town.

Shortly after entering Act 3 and the town of Rivington, players will encounter a religious temple with a bit of a stir outside, the Temple of the Open Hand. The Temple of the Open Hand generally accepts refugees, but currently does not do so due to the recent killing of their leader, Father Lorgan, who was supposedly killed by Brilgor, one of the refugees mentioned above. Talking to those in and around the temple will give players different opinions on what really happened, but no one is really sure of the truth. To begin the quest to uncover the truth, players should talk to Sister Yannis and offer to help solve the crime. The investigator tasked with uncovering the truth, a Hollyphant named Valeria, is fully convinced that Brilgor is guilty.

Sister Yannis gives the player various points of interest to check out in their investigation, and there is no specific order in which to complete them. This guide will specifically cover one of the most direct routes, starting with investigating Father Lorgan's corpse in the room at the most southwestern part of the Temple.

Updated on September 23, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: The Temple of the Open Hand murder case has to be one of the most complicated cases players will encounter in Baldur's Gate 3. A criminal goes on the run, kills all the citizens in the name of Bhaal, and gathers his hands. Following in the steps of the criminal and using a few Talk to the dead spells/potions in Baldur's Gate 3Tav must gather enough clues to capture the one responsible and protect the people of Baldur's Gate City.

Father Lorgan's corpse in BG3

Unfortunately, there isn't much to immediately notice about Father's corpse, unless the player thinks a little more outside the box. The best course of action here is for the player to use the “speak to the dead” ability to speak directly to Father Lorgan where you can ask him about various things such as where, when and how he died and more importantly , who killed him. Father Lorgan will reveal that Brilgor is not the person who killed him, but rather that he was killed by a “dwarf in red”.

After speaking with Father Lorgan, players should keep the character that is able to speak to the dead in their party, as their task is not yet complete. From the room with Father Lorgan's corpse, players should go out the back door, which leads outside, and into the door directly across from them, which leads into the kitchen. Before entering the hatch that Sister Yannis mentioned, players should go through the door to the west of the kitchen, following the stairs down and out.

From here, players should follow the path through the cemetery until they see the grave next to the small mausoleum. Interacting with the dirt mound will allow the player to remove Brilgor's coffin, and attacking with a character will reveal Brilgor's corpse. Once again, players should use their death-talking partner to gather more details from Brilgor, the alleged “killer”.

Now that the players have talked enough with the dead and gathered the relevant details, it's time to head to the crime scene. Return to the kitchen and enter the hatch that Sister Yannis mentioned, which will lead to the cellar of the Temple of the Open Hand. Once inside the dungeon, players must follow the corridor until they find themselves in a large room with two statues, an altar, and a very obvious wall panel opening behind it.

Directly across from the shrine is another room that houses a pile of buried corpses, and while that room isn't relevant to this quest, it's an important part of the “Help the Cursed Monk” quest that players started in during Act 2. Once the player is ready to continue, they should check the walls directly next to the two statues, where they will find an interactable tile called “heraldic sign”, and interacting with this sign will reveal a button on either side. Pressing the buttons will open the wall panel and allow the player to proceed to the crime scene.

Once players have delved a bit into the crime scene room, they will be thrown into a fight that cannot be avoided or excluded. Players should make sure their team is properly rested, equipped, and prepared before going through the now open wall panel!

Once the player has defeated and looted the enemies, he should be sure to also loot any corpses nearby – presumably the victims of the people the player just defeated. Among these victims is the corpse of Dribbles the Clown, so looting this corpse is a very important part of another side quest in Act 3 that players have probably already taken on.

Another victim will hold the “flower key”, which will allow the player to proceed to the next part of the mission. Furthermore, next to the wooden platform will be a hole in the ground that can be searched to find the murder weapon, the “Stillmaker”. Players must be perceptive enough to discover this hole on their own. Before leaving, players are free to use their ability to speak with the dead again to interrogate their attackers, although this step is completely optional.

Checkpoint BG3 South Span

Now that the player has found the key to the flower, they have the most essential part of solving the crime. The question is: what is unlocked? The answer to this can be found in a nearby inn, Fraygo's Flophouse. However, getting to the Flophouse can be a potentially more complicated endeavor than players might anticipate. To get to the Flophouse, players must first go through the South Span checkpoint, just north of the Temple of the Open Hand. This checkpoint is guarded by five Fist units and one of the large Steel Watchers, and various other Fist units are close enough to join any fights that might break out here.

Thanks to nature Baldur's Gate 3the experience of getting through this checkpoint can vary depending on the different choices players have made so far, with some players being able to work their way through, some needing to fight or face prison, and others potentially to bypass in another way. In case players need an alternate method over this checkpoint, abilities like “Fly” and ” Misty Step” can allow characters to walk around or pass through the checkpoint without triggering the interrogation. Additionally, if players are imprisoned, it is very possible to break out.

Once players have passed the South Span checkpoint and entered Wyrm's Crossing, it's time to head to Fraygo's Flophouse. The flophouse is located directly by the checkpoint; it will be the door immediately to the player's left. The player can accuse the employee of being the killer for silly dialogue, but the real thing players are looking for here is up. Players should head up and corner the first opening on their right to find themselves face to face with a staircase that will lead to the Flophouse bridge.

In the very messy attic, players will find a unique clean-looking wardrobe that seems out of place, which is actually a secret entrance that can be unlocked with the flower key that players looted earlier. Upon entering this room, the desk to the player's right holds what the players are looking for: a diary that reveals the murder to be part of a Bhaalist plot, as well as a hit list of the other intended murder targets.

Baldur's Gate 3 Valeria Detective Hollyphant

Now that the players have adequate evidence that Brilgor is innocent and that Father Lorgan was killed as part of a serial murder plot in the name of the god Bhaal, it's time for the players to report their findings to their Hollyphant friend Valeria. Valeria can be found just across the street from the Flophouse on the second floor of Sharess' Caress.

If, for some reason, Valeria isn't there, it probably means the player has progressed a little too far into the main plot, and they'll be able to find her again somewhere else later. Talking to Valeria will finish the Open Hand Temple Murders quest, and she'll send players on their way to start a new line of quests around planned murders and the Bhaalist cult.

Baldurs Gate 3 Crime Cora

After the serial killer is discovered to be a Bhaalist with a hit list, markers will appear on the players map indicating the locations of the victims. Search for CORA and go to her wine tasting party. Tav will see Cora, her husband and Dolor Meztli enjoying some wine. The best course of action here is to warn her and that will piss off Dolor since he is the serial killer.

The party will immediately get into a fight with Dolor and his doppelgangers. After defeating everyone, you find that Cora is safe, but the real Dolor has run off to finish off her next victim, which in this case is Figaro Pennygood. Head towards Facemaker boutique in Lower Town to see that Dolor already has Fiagro at a knife's edge. A cutscene will show Devella on the floor, confirming that whether or not Tav meets her first, Figaro will still be in danger.

If Tav chooses to sneak up and surprise the Bhaalist, it will result in the victim's immediate death, so announce your presence to save the shop owner and defeat the serial killer. Talk to Devella and then loot the corpse to find the hands of the previous victims as well as more evidence. Additionally, Dolor also has some great items like potions and spells, as well as a decent dagger. Once Tav confirms that the shop owner is safe, Fiagro offers players discounts on all of its items.
