Yotei's ghostcontinuation to Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Productions, was undoubtedly the biggest revelation during the recent State of Play presentation. The biggest surprise to many was the developer's decision to leave Tsushima and Jin Sakai's story behind, instead introducing a new setting and a new female protagonist. While some fans expected Jin to return, this new direction seems to be a perfect fit for Ghost series. It allows developers to keep the outstanding features that fans have come to love, while offering new perspectives, time periods and regions, just like assassin's creed series.
So far, little is known about Yotei's ghostcurrently slated for release in 2025. While details are scarce – particularly regarding the story – the reveal trailer alone highlighted a few differences from Ghost of Tsushima which some fans missed. Let's explore the biggest confirmed changes that will make the upcoming game feel both fresh and familiar.
1 New protagonist

In Ghost of TsushimaJin Sakai quickly became a fan favorite due to his depth and complexity as a character. She made the decision to leave him behind Yotei's ghost a surprise to many, although it makes a lot of sense. According to the developers, the mainstay of the series is the concept of a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, allowing them to introduce new, original characters and stories with each installment.
In Yotei's ghostplayers will step into the role of Atsu, a wandering female warrior hunted by many ronin for reasons yet to be revealed. Although the details of Atsu's story and past are still under wraps, she already seems intriguing – an experienced katana wielder. Given Sucker Punch's track record, there's no doubt they'll once again deliver a compelling and memorable protagonist.
2 The new region of Japan
Players will explore the map of Mount Yōtei and its surroundings
Before his reveal Yotei's ghostmany have speculated about the possibility Ghost of Tsushima 2 reusing the islands of Tsushima and Iki as a setting. Fortunately, the developers opted for a completely new region of Japan. Players will now explore the towering peak of Mount Yōtei and its surroundings, located in the heart of Ezo (present-day Hokkaido).
The exact size of Yotei's ghost the map is still unknown, but it is expected to be at least as extensive as the territories of the previous game. Based on the trailer, the new areas will be visually stunning, with a variety of environments including snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and bustling settlements. The most striking landmark is undoubtedly Mount Yōtei itself, a colossal peak that looms on the horizon as players explore the lands at its base.
3 New Era
The events take place over 300 years after Ghost Of Tsushima
As confirmed, the events of Yotei's ghost they take place in 1603, over 300 years later Ghost of Tsushima. While the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274 was a fascinating time to explore, jumping to a few centuries later seems just as intriguing. Set during the early Edo period (also known as the Tokugawa period), it marks the last era of traditional feudal Japan.
The reveal trailer for Yotei's ghost featured notable Western-inspired influences, with authentic music and the mood of a lone, self-motivated wandering hero in contrast to Jin's honorable mission from the first game. Given the time gap between the two titles, it's unlikely that players will encounter any familiar characters. However, the events of Ghost of Tsushima may still reappear as legends of a vengeful ghost from the past.
4 New types of weapons
Players can expect new weapons, including firearms
Given the more advanced time period, it's no surprise that players can expect new weapons Yotei's ghost. While Jin Sakai primarily relied on his katana and tanto for stealth kills, Atsu was shown to dual-wield katanas and even using matchlock muskets instead of traditional bows. In a segment of the revealed footage, Atsu also wielded a kusarigama – a traditional Japanese weapon that combines a sickle (kama) and a chain (kusari) – delivering swift and spectacular blows to her enemies.
Fight in Ghost of Tsushima it's already been a standout feature and looks likely to expand to new heights going forward. If Sucker Punch can retain the satisfying feel of katana combat while introducing new weapons to master, upgrade, and wield, players will surely be delighted.
5 New musical instrument
Instead of Jin's flute, players will play A Shamisen
One of the notable changes from Yotei's ghost the reveal trailer is the new musical instrument that Atsu takes on her journey. While Jin Sakai played the shakuhachi (flute) to perform various songs and change the weather Ghost of TsushimaAtsu will play the shamisen—a traditional Japanese stringed instrument (also called samisen or sangen). This change in musical instruments may reflect the Western-inspired mood of the game, and could serve a similar function to that of the flute, potentially impacting the environment.
In the revealed footage, the shamisen is always visible on Atsu's back, which drew mixed reactions from fans. It's unclear if players will be able to hide the instrument from the character model, but given that the shamisen is larger than the flute, it makes sense for it to remain visible throughout the game.
