The best medium armors and their locations in Baldur's Gate 3

Medium armor is an interesting armor option in Baldur's Gate 3. As the name suggests, it's between light and heavy armor, offering greater defensive capabilities than the former, taking better advantage of overall agility than the latter. It's a nice option for higher dexterity builds, but not so high that it makes light armor the better option.

That being said, what is the best medium armor available on your journey to Baldur's Gate? There are some interesting options to choose from here to customize your character, making sure your AC (armor class) won't be too low during the fights to come, as well as giving you additional perks.

Updated on September 27, 2024 by Lucas Olah: While there aren't any new armors in the game, it's always nice to look back and make sure our information is verified. So we've decided to add one more to the list that's worth mentioning, as well as give a quick explanation of each gear's stats and where to find them, making sure you have an easier time finding the armor that best suits your build. throughout the acts.

We'll talk about both the initial armor you can quickly find in Act 1 and the armor in Act 3.

So you'll probably ditch some of these and trade them in for later entries. You can always give armor to your companions when they stop working for you.

8 Scale Mail

I have to start somewhere

Scale Mail icon from Baldur's Gate 3.

Act

All three.

NEEDLE

14 plus the dexterity bonus (max +2).

Where to find

Can be bought by multiple merchants and dropped by multiple enemies.

Other Effects

Disadvantage on Stealth checks.

What is the simplest medium armor doing here, you ask? Well, every character has to start somewhere, and this is one of the best armors to start the game with while saving up for better gear, with a base AC of 14, not to mention your dexterity bonus.

Fighters start with this, although some classes, such as the Paladin, start with the same armor but with a different appearance. You'll find it in abundance when looting enemies, and it's worth it when playing with classes like Clerics (or give one to Shadowheart since it's better than her starting armor).

7 Adamantine Scale Mail

Critical immunity

Adamantine Scale Mail icon from Baldur's Gate 3.

Act

Act 1

NEEDLE

16 plus the dexterity bonus (max +2).

Where to find

Obtaining his mold and forging it at the Adamantine Forge.

Other Effects

  • Minus one to all damage.
  • Whoever hits you takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls for two turns.
  • Enemies cannot lend you critical hits.
  • Disadvantage on Stealth checks.

The best part about Adamantine Scale Mail it's as early as you can get it – relatively speaking, as the game is huge. This is one of the many items you can craft in the Adamantine Forge in the Underdark in Act 1. The base AC is 16 and lowers all damage taken by one.

The fun part, though, it inflicts the Reeling condition on anyone it hits – which gives them a -1 on their next attack rolls – and enemies can't critical hit you (if they roll a nat 20, it'll be a normal hit). Remember, you can only forge two items at the Adamantine Forge, so be sure of your choices.

Unless otherwise stated, each piece of medium armor will only get a +2 to AC from your Dexterity, even if your Dexterity is 16 or higher.

The Medium Armor Master Feat will allow the bonus to increase to +3 and still remove the Stealth disadvantage.

6 Yuan-ti Scale Mail

Use all your Dexterity

Act

Act 2

NEEDLE

Where to find

You can buy it from Quartermaster Talli, who will first appear at the Last Light Inn.

Other effects

  • Add your entire Dexterity bonus to AC.
  • +1 to your points of initiative.

If all the medium armor restrictions bother you, then you'll love it Yuan-Ti Scale Mail. First, it allows you to add your entire dexterity bonus to 15 AC, meaning you can get an AC of 20 if you've already maxed out your dexterity. It doesn't impose a disadvantage on Stealth rolls and gives you a +1 to your initiative, which is always nice.

There is a better medium armor with similar effects to your AC bonus, but it's worth mentioning because of how early you can get it: you can buy it from Talli at the Last Light Inn.

5 Psionic Armor

Embrace Gith Fashion

The Psionic Armor it might catch your interest if you play as a powerful Githyanki. It has a base AC of 15, and whenever you succeed on saving throws against spells, you heal for 1d4. It has one more unique trait that only triggers when worn by Githyanki: it gives you resistance to psychic damage, making your character a threat to Mind Flayers, as Gith should be.

If this armor interests you, you will have to fight for it. You can get it by looting Ch'r'ai Tska'an, a Githyanki who will ambush you in Act 2 near the checkpoint leading to Baldur's Gate.

  • Very rare version: 17 plus the dexterity bonus (max +2).

  • Very rare version: Have Shadowheart kill Nightsong to upgrade the armor.

Other effects

  • Advantage on Stealth checks when it is dark.
  • Advantage on Constitution saving throws.
  • Shar's Aegis exclusive spell, which increases your AC by two (similar to Shield of Faith), but also deals 1d4 necrotic damage to anyone who attacks you.
  • Only rare versions: The aforementioned necrotic damage will also trigger with a regular Shield of Faith spell.

Are you ready to be bad? The Dark Justiciar Half-Plate has two versions: a rare version and an enhanced, very rare version. The rare version starts with an AC of 16. It gives you advantage on Stealth rolls when you are dark and gives you advantage on Constitution saving throws in general. It also allows you to cast Shield of Faith once per long rest.

Once upgraded, your base AC goes to 17 and you gain a unique perk: when Shield of Faith is activated, all damage taken is reduced by two, and regardless of the attack, you'll take a d4 of necrotic damage. The rare version can be found in the Gauntlet of Shar, along with the Spear of Night, but to upgrade it to a very rare iteration, you'll need to kill Nightsong.

Other Effects

  • +2 to your initiative rolls and saving throws.
  • Resistance to fire damage.
  • Free Fire Shield Cast: Warm once per long rest.

With a base AC of 16, flame enamel armor is a solid choice for armor due to its resistance to fire, and damage resistance is always good. It also gives you a +2 to both your initiative and saving throws, along with the power to cast the Fire Shield spell, but only the Warm version, which will give you temporary resistance to cold damage and will damage anyone who attacks you in melee for 2d8 fire damage.

If you want this armor, though, then be ready to do some killing. It's located in a chest in a restricted area of Wyrm's Rock, which means you'll have to sneak around and get it. Or you can fight everyone; it might be needed anyway, depending on your choices.

Dexterity Without Limits

Baldur's Gate 3 Spam Masterwork Scalemail icon.

Act

Act 3

16 plus Dexterity bonus (unlimited).

Where to find

You can buy it from Dammon – assuming he made it to Baldur's Gate.

Other Effects

  • Add your entire Dexterity bonus to AC.
  • Resistance to fire damage.

We have another medium armor that allows you to ignore the +2 cap bonus from your dexterity modifier. This armor starts with an AC of 16 and will allow you any bonus you have with your dexterity and also comes with resistance to fire damage.

You can get it in Act 3 by buying it from Dammon. The good thing is that it's not the most expensive thing in the world. The bad part is that our next entry is essentially a better version of this armor that becomes available around the same time. This is mainly a good choice due to money issues or if both you and a companion need one of these medium armors without dexterity limitations.

1 Armor of Agility

Become untouchable

Armor of Agility icon from Baldur's Gate 3.

Where to find

You can buy it from Gloomy Fentonson, a vendor near Sorcerous Sundries.

  • +2 to your saving throws.

Similar to the previous entry, The Armor of Agility allows you to add the full Dexterity bonus to AC instead of just the +2 limitation. The base AC here is 17 though, which is a significant bonus and also allows you to ignore the disadvantage of Stealth checks.

Essentially a character with 20 dexterity will have an AC of 22 alone with this armor and you can go more than 20 to your dexterity or wear a shield to get that number even higher – with the right set and this armor , it is possible to reach an AC of 28. It also gives you a +2 bonus when making saving throws.

You can get this nice armor in Act 3 by buying it from a merchant named Gloomy Fentonson in the Stormshore Armory – it's near the Lower City Central Wall checkpoint.

You can get this armor with a high dexterity character by choosing certain races like dwarves or githyanki, or feats like Moderately Armored – if your class doesn't give you the proficiency by default, that is.
