A Pokemon TCG Pocket promotional event seems to be a matter of when, not if

The Pokemon TCG Pocket the craze is in full swing as the game has clocked over 30 million downloads across all mobile platforms, thanks in part to in-game promotions and events. The latest features the always adorable Pokemon Normal Meowth, with event duels giving players the chance to acquire powerful EX Lapras copies. Such events not only bring in players, but keep them engaged in the game. It's only a matter of time before they promote one of their most popular “mons” to bring in new players and keep the current ones.

As with Pokemon GoTHE Pokémon the franchise wants to target more casual players with Pokemon TCG Pocket. The game still offers a satisfying combat experience despite having simpler mechanics compared to the trading card game. Like the real thing, though, the main attraction of TCG pocket seems to draw the strongest and/or prettiest cards. Now that Pikachu. Mewtwo, the starters Gen. 1 and Meowth have had their share of the spotlight, there's one more Pokemon the game can promote to gain even more mainstream appeal.

Why a ranked Pokemon TCG Pocket mod would be a double-edged sword

Pokemon TCG Pocket attempts to bring players a mobile approach to the iconic game, and a potentially ranked mode has its pros and cons.

Eevee seems to be an inevitable event in Pokemon TCG Pocket

Eevee and their evolutions are the logical choices regarding Pokemon TCG Pockethis upcoming promotional events. There are eight Eeveelutions so far:

Pokémon Type
Vaporeon Water
Flareon Fire
Jolteon Electric
Umbrella Darkness
Espeon Mental
Leafeon Grass
Sylveon Fairy
Glaceon Ice

Only Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon are available in
Pokemon TCG Pocket
until now, as they are included in the game's first booster pack called Genetic Apex.

Eeveelutions consistently top the official popularity charts. A Gamewith survey published in December 2023 found Sylveon, the Fairy-type Eeveelution, to be the fourth most popular Pokemon in Japan. Eevee also ranks fourth in the Kanto region in the latest Pokemon of the Year results. Even in the 2024 community polls on r/Pokemon, Eevee ranks fifth, just behind their Dark Umbreon evolution.

Eevolutions have some of the most collectible artwork

While Eevee is fairly easy to obtain for hobbyists, its evolutions are harder to obtain. Rarest Eeveelution cards from Pokemon TCG they often have gorgeous artwork by highly acclaimed artists. A great example is the Holofoil Flareon, which artist Kyoko Umemoto painted with bright orange and yellow hues juxtaposed against a cold, dreary background of a grassy field at night.

Some Eeveelution cards are highly prized because they are nearly impossible to obtain, such as Umbreon Gold Star, which comes from a limited edition pack that was only distributed from March to September 2009. Creating similar looking cards for Eeveelutions in Pokemon TCG Pocket would be appreciated by long-time collectors and new players alike.

Pokemon TCG Pocket could release the remaining Eeveelutions as event cards

Eeveelutions definitely deserve to be featured in booster packs, and this sentiment is supported by the fact that the IRL TCG recently released the Prismatic Evolution expansion that includes them. Pokemon TCG Pocket could give popular Eeveelutions like Umbreon and Sylveon their own decks and give them exciting highlight cards. The game could take it a step further and create art accessories on the deck with leftover Eeveelutions. Having a full Eevee family on a play mat would be nice to see. Even PROMO or Battle Event cards featuring alternate art of existing in-game Eeveelutions would definitely be a hit with avid collectors.

The current Eeveelutions deck ranks at the bottom (or not at all) of most Pokemon TCG Pocket Genetic Apex Deck Tier Lists. However, that might change once more powerful creatures like Sylveon are introduced to the Dex. As such, competitive players should adjust their expectations accordingly once Eevee events materialize.
