Difficulty Mode Differences in Divinity: Original Sin 2

difficulty settings in divinity original sin 2

I am four difficulty modes in Divinity: Original Sin 2and a special way which can only be selected when the Tactician difficulty is chosen. Here's the breakdown.

Story

You're here for fun and fantasy, but not for a rigorous challenge.

  • Player stats are massively improved.
  • Enemy stats are massively nerfed.

Explorer

You prefer a fair but forgiving adventure that rewards smart thinking in and out of combat.

  • Player stats are slightly improved.
  • Enemy stats are slightly nerfed.

Classical

A classic RPG experience. You are cunning, resourceful and prepared for the dangers that await you.

  • Player stats are unchanged.
  • Enemy stats are unchanged.

tactician

Bring it on. Combat is demanding and your enemies are cunning and observant; for every surprise you get, they'll respond with two of their own. Not for the faint of heart.

  • Player stats are unchanged.
  • Enemy stats are massively improved.
  • Enemies gain additional AP per round.
  • Enemies gain unique special abilities.
  • Merchant prices go up
  • Enemy AI is smarter.

Honor (permanent death)

Failure is not an option. Raise the stakes by limiting the already extremely challenging Tactician mode to a single rescue game. If your entire party dies, the save game is wiped and your quest is truly over.

  • All tactician rules apply.
  • A single save file.

BG3 Tactician and DOS2 Tactician mode is differenteven though the two games have some similarities. While both games are made by Larian Studios, Baldur's Gate 3 uses the D&D ruleset, whereas Divinity: Original Sin 2 use Larian's internal rules specific to this game. Exploits and workarounds to become OP that work in BG3 will not work DOS2 because the systems are completely different. Only players who have learned the ins and outs of the title and understand how to best target enemy weaknesses will emerge victorious.

Players can switch between Story, Explorer, and Classic modes at any time during a game; however, if Tactician is selected, whether Regular or Honor mode, there is no way to reduce the difficulty to an easier setting without starting a new save.

To change difficulty modes, open the pause menu, go to choicethen Gameplayand use “Difficulty Setting” drop-down menu on the right screen to make a change. Select “Apply,” then 'Accept' to lock your choice.

How Honor mode works in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Honor mod difficulty settings in divinity original sin 2

Honor Mode is a special difficulty setting available to players who choose to play DOS2 tactically. When selected, this limits the player to a single save file. Every time the game autosaves or the player creates a manual save, the save file is overwritten. There is no way to reload from a previous save, and players are forced to see the consequences of their actions until the end. If all members of the player's party die, it is Game Over and the save file for the run is automatically deleted from the system.

What difficulty mode should you choose in Divinity: Original Sin 2

For veteran CRPG players jumping in DOS2 for the first time Classic mode is easily the best choice. Even players who always play games on the hardest difficulty will find Tactician Mode a drag at best and extremely unfair at worst. It's meant to be played in a second or third playthrough when all the game mechanics are understood and enemy encounters are no longer a surprise. On a first playthrough, most combat encounters are a surprise. Getting caught out of tactician position is an easy ticket to an early death. Beginners will almost always have to replay the same encounter over and over again and rely on saving to pull off a brute force victory, especially in the early stages of the game. Classic mode is a great balance and is the way to go Divinity: Original Sin 2 it is meant to be experienced.
