Are devils capable of caring for others?
Devils feed on fear, but are they capable of caring?
In Chainsaw Man, Devils are vicious monsters born from the concept of human fears. Early in the series, we see Denji fighting various devils as a private sector devil hunter or with the Devil Hunters Public Safety Commission. That means people hate Devils. But are devils capable of caring for others, humans and devils alike?
There are a few cases where Devils are able to care for others to a degree. However, this ability also requires a certain level of intelligence. In Chapter 5, Makima notes that Power has a higher level of intelligence and reasoning than other Devils. Devils with lower intelligence levels are likely motivated only by their base instinct.
The first Devil we see capable of caring for others is Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. Although Pochita only communicates by barking and whining like a dog, when fused with Denji, we see intelligent and caring thoughts. This is seen in Episode 12 where Pochita tries to stop Denji from opening the door or remembering his traumatic past. In addition to various instances throughout the series, Pochita and Denji are seen cuddling together.
The next Devil or Fiend we know is Power. In Chapter 4, the Power has a very assertive attitude and essentially sees humans as inferior beings. However, in the Meowy's Whereabouts chapter, Powers' caring personality shines through. Although through season 1 of the anime, Power still only cares about herself and her cat, Meowy. Although Power didn't care much for humans, after living with Hayakawa Aki and Denji, Power soon bonded with the two.
Denji… He's my first friend.
After the International Assassins and Gun Devil arc, Power and Denji bonded to the point where Power allowed Denji to drink her blood, furthermore, in chapter 90, Power calls Denji her friend. The Power cares so much for Denji that she gives up her blood to revive him in exchange for finding the Blood Devil and transforming him back into the Power.
In addition, Makima, the Control Devil, took care of several dogs, naming them and treating them well. This largely reflects her Controlling Devil personality. Dogs are known to follow instructions and obey when properly trained. Makima, as the Control Devil, likes to control others to the point of seeing them as similar to dogs.
Are devils able to take care of other devils?
Devils normally act alone, so would they care about another devil?
We have seen that Devils are capable of caring for others, namely humans and pets. This brings up the question of whether Devils care about other Devils. In Chapter 9, it was revealed that Devils can also have relationships. After Denji defeats the Devil Bat, who kidnapped Meowy, the Leech Devil appears. The devil leech immediately attacked Denji for killing her “Cute Bat” and announced that he was her man.
This shows that Devils are able to care for other Devils and thus enter into relationships. The Devil Angel also revealed that he was in a relationship with a human before he was taken and controlled by Makima. However, Devils are capable of caring for others. They probably put their own interests first before anyone else.

In the Falling Devil arc, we learn more about the Famine Devil's true plan regarding the Nostradamus Prophecy. Here we learn that the age of men will end and thus the age of devils will begin. Nayuta, the new Control Devil, first thinks it sounds fun and likes the idea of the age of devils, showing her enjoyment of the chaos that would ensue.
However, after the Hunger Devil made it clear that pizza and Chinese food would no longer exist, her selfish nature and interests took precedence over stopping the Prophecy. While devils may care for each other, it probably has something to do with their interests. This is also seen in chapter 177, when the War Devil turned his own children, the Tank and Gun Devil, into weapons, although when asked about this, the War Devil showed hesitation as he might have felt in a somewhat sad.
Why do devils harm people?
Fear is not enough for devils to live
It is clear that Devils are capable of caring for others, whether they are humans, pets, or other Devils. But why do Devils seek to harm people? As mentioned before, devils are born from concepts that people fear. For a Devil to gain more power, he must incite more fear in people; the more a man fears them, the stronger they will become.
However, there is another method they can use to gain power. Devils can drink the blood of humans or other stronger Devils to gain more power. We see this when Denji drinks the blood of the Eternity Devil to replenish himself and when Pochita allows the Power to drink his blood.
Although devils are capable of caring for others, perhaps this can weaken them. Devils need fear and the blood of humans to survive and gain power. Devils are inherently evil and seek to procure their own desires; however, intelligent Devils seek more than their base desires.
