Do those side quests

First, there is many side missions that are set at or near the objectives of the main story missions. We strongly suggest doing all the side quests you can when you get to a new area, then complete them as you do the MSQ. Not all side quests happen near the main story objectives, so you can refrain from taking them or simply hide them from the journal so that the UI is not cluttered.

Regional XP bonuses

Second, you can get regional XP bonuses by unlocking perks, which you can get by earning position points in the territory New World: Aeternum.
