Can you change courses in Witchfire?

Witch fire has finally made its way to Steam with six playable classes to choose from: Butcher, Hunter, Slayer, Shadow, Saint, and Penitent. The descriptions show what each class is capable of doing. Some even come with a warning sign that they are not beginner friendly. The dark fantasy rogue-lite shooter takes a few pages from the Souls games, so players will likely want to try out each class to see which best suits their playstyle.

This is of course also a common expectation of every player in any RPG. Your first playthrough will probably leave you wondering how the other classes play. However, his soul-like tendencies mean that changing classes isn't as simple as visiting an NPC or opening a specific menu. There are certain obstacles in progress that players need to understand. Here's what the game has to offer.

Can you change courses in Witchfire?

Witchfire - Knight Ambush

The only way to change courses in Witch fire is to start a new character. You cannot change courses for the same profile. For example, if you find the long-range rifle gameplay of the Shadow class too demanding, or if you want to try any of the other classes, you must ditch your Shadow character and create a new profile.

Progress is not shared between profiles. The rogue-lite nature of
Witch fire

prevents you from transferring anything unlocked from one character to another. Therefore, creating a new class profile is essentially starting from scratch.

However, the inability to switch classes isn't entirely doom and gloom. Something new players should understand is that hours don't matter in Witch fire. All can be leveled up to unlock each weapon, spell, upgrade, etc. out of the game.

What's the point of changing classes in Witchfire?

Just like the hours of Dark soulsthe hours in Witch fire serves only as a startup preset. Choosing a class in Witch fire it means what weapons, spells, and stat distribution you start with.

Slayer and Shadow for example have the highest starting Witchery stat for your spells. Slayer starts with more stamina, which is an important stat in the game. Shadow, on the other hand, has more Metanoia to help you level up quickly.

Peitent, as another example, starts with one of the best weapons in Witch firebut none of his stats are boosted. However, you can use Ascension Shrine to level it up a few times to get the same Endurance and Metanoia stats as the Slayer and Shadow classes. On the same note, both Slayer and Shadow can unlock the Penitent's starting weapon.

So it all comes down to what starting gear and stats you want Witch fire. Finally, each class can unlock everything and max out each stat.

Researching new weapons and spells in
Witch fire
used to depend on RNG. There was no guarantee that the medium range weapon you were researching would be the Hangfire hand cannon. Following the Wailing Tower update, however, each weapon and spell category has a research order. Taking the same example, Hangfire is now the third mid-range weapon, meaning you're guaranteed to unlock Hangfire on your third research. Similarly, Hailstorm, a popular sniper rifle, is now a second guaranteed unlock in the long-range category.
