Cricket: Cricket Australia finally finds a sponsor for men’s team

Cricket Australia has found a taker for what had been a vacant sponsor’s spot on the front of the men’s playing kits, with Toyota replacing Alinta Energy, which ended its five-year partnership in June.

That partnership ended in the wake of comments from Test skipper Pat Cummins, who declared CA should make the climate a “priority” when considering “who we want to invite into being part of cricket”.

Both Alinta and Cummins denied the comments had anything to do with the deal ending, and confirmed the decision had already been made, but the Test captain was cast as a “woke” villain by some critics.

Just on 12 months after Alinta confirmed it would end the relationship, CA has signed only a one-year deal with Toyota, already a partner, to adorn the shirts of the Australian men’s team this summer in Tests and white-ball matches.

The one-year-deal leaves CA able to look for more lucrative, longer-term partnerships ahead of a blockbuster series against England and India in coming home summers.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our relationships with our valued partners Toyota and HCLTech, and that their prestigious brands will appear on the Australian shirts this summer,” CA executive general manager broadcast and commercial Stephanie Beltrame said.

“We have taken the opportunity to separate the playing and training uniforms for this season to amplify the roles and prominence each holds.”

Toyota has been a partner of CA since 2012 and the deal has included wide use of hybrid vehicles by the governing body, a note to Cummins’ views on climate change.

The men’s Test team was sponsored by Qantas for the recent Ashes series in England.
