Cruise ship rescues 68 migrants heading for Spain’s Canaries, five dead

MADRID: A luxury cruise ship rescued dozens of migrants trying to reach Spain’s Canary Islands in a fishing boat that ran aground in rough seas, killing five, Spanish authorities and the cruise operator said on Thursday. In recent years, the archipelago has become the main entry point to Spain for illegal migrants from Africa, and the route is also the deadliest. Migrant rights group Walking Borders said last week that nearly 5,000 migrants had died at sea on the route in the first five months of 2024.
