Key recommendations
- The Solar Flare technique in Dragon Ball is simple but effective, used to stun enemies and create openings in battle.
- The technique originates from the Crane School, known for its complicated abilities, and has been used by various characters.
- Despite its usefulness, Solar Flare is not used frequently due to Saiyan fighters' preference for hand-to-hand combat.
Of all Dragon Ball techniques that are used as utility or skill based skills, Solar Flare in particular is not the most used, but the most useful when used correctly. After all, the ability serves as a momentary distraction or a stun grenade against the enemy, allowing heroes to take advantage of how long the effects last to dissipate immediately. Everyone including Goku, Krillin and even Cell has used this technique on some occasion and to a greater degree of control with the same general purpose. When asked, many will say that it is a useful technique in Dragon Ball.
However, why isn't this skill used more often and what about its origins can we learn and consider when understanding this skill? The explanation may be simple, but it never hurts to go into detail about the origins of the ability and its background.

Goku is arguably the strongest character in the Dragon Ball universe, but even then, there are several characters he has never defeated.
Simple but surprising execution
The truth behind the solar flare
Solar Flare may seem old-fashioned and not exactly made for dealing damage, but the technique itself is brilliant for closing the gap when it comes to weaker users facing stronger opponents. After all, the technique itself is simple in execution and use; placing your hands close to your face, usually with your fingers outstretched or in a motion to emit light from your face. The ability uses Ki, but also emits a bright flash of light that hits most opponents without fail. After all, no one can be prepared for a flash of light that suddenly explodes in front of you and temporarily blinds you.
However, when someone asks where Solar Flare came from, you'll have to go to Tienshinhan and the former martial arts school he was a part of. The Crane School, a rival school to the Turtle School, created the technique with the usual base in complicated skills that allowed them certain victories, even if they needed to fight dirty. This is shown in the general usage of Solar Flare, although its form reflects its original pronunciation and translation.
Taiyoken, or Sun Fist, as a technique is not only used by Tienshinhan, but also used by Goku and Krillin whenever and wherever they need to escape danger. However, the ability was used by Cell during his Imperfect and Semi-Perfect forms as a result of his genetics from the strongest warriors on Earth. This led to his first encounters becoming a race to find him before he devoured too many cities. Overall, the ability itself has a good amount of usage, and yet it doesn't seem to be used too often by Goku or Krillin outside of situational circumstances.

Only seen a few times in Dragon Ball Z, Trunks' Double Buster is a great setup move that allows the hybrid saiyan to deal some damage to his enemies.
Why the skill was not used
And why is it impressive
Unfortunately for the ability, it's useful when you look at all the times it's been used, but never really remembered or used more often when the ability could be used more creatively as an ability against the enemy to open attacks when fighting in cooperation. However, there may be a reason why the ability wasn't used outside of one enemy or a few allies. First, most of the major players are Saiyans or half-Saiyans who fight with their bare fists along with their natural prowess; Goku is probably one of the only Saiyans who would willingly fight with the Solar Flare technique, excluding Vegeta, Trunks, or Gohan. However, aside from all the times it was used, let's take a moment to appreciate the ability's effect and the inherent value it has for the warriors who used it, along with the stories that were told at the time.
Ever since the introduction of Tienshinhan when he used the ability, Solar Flare has become a staple that many people can't help but feel a great passion for the technique that saved Goku, Krillin and even sometimes a few of the Z -Fighters. This ability, in general, is impressive because it is only blocked by blind people or those with sunglasses. And how many wrestlers besides Master Roshi can you count who wear sunglasses or are visually impaired?
Not many you could count on one hand, but that means it's impressive, and the fact that this is one of the few techniques passed down from the Crane School to the rest of the Z-Warriors when its original master and creator was extinguished and the school itself quieted down. Dragon Ball might still get more use for Solar Flare, and that's a good thing if the manga and Dragon Ball ALWAYS they were going to be released and focus on a smaller adventure. Even so, Dragon Ball provided a huge contribution with the technique.
