Episode 3 of Destiny 2 is caught between a rock and a hard place

Summary

  • Destiny 2's Heresy episode needs to launch without bugs to keep players engaged ahead of Frontiers.
  • The Revenant issues and Dawning bugs signal the need for improved gameplay improvements in Heresy.
  • Heresy's success depends on fixing past issues and releasing an engaging, bug-free game.

With 2024 almost over, it's a good time to reflect on what the year has brought Destiny 2 and how the game has evolved over time. The release of The Final Shape expansion reshaped the game in major ways, from ending the 10-year Light and Darkness saga to adding innovative features like the Prismatic subclasses. This was probably the highest point for Destiny 2 in its history, but has unfortunately been followed by various downturns starting with Bungie layoffs and culminating now with Episode Revenant and the Dawning 2024 event being riddled with bugs. As such, while the next big release is Frontiers, Episode 3 isn't in a great place.

Episode 3, which will be called Heresy, will be released in February 2025 and is expected to run for around four months, which means Frontiers will be out sometime in early June, barring delays. Although February isn't just around the corner, Episode Revenant has suffered from various in-game issues as well Destiny 2The Tonic Controversy or the Advantage Weighting Scandal. The common denominator for the various problems the game has been through recently is bugs, and with Bungie's active developers on the game dwindling, Heresy may not be as polished as it needs to be.

Destiny 2's Revenant bugs bode ill for the Heresy episode

After Revenant and Destiny 2The Dawning 2024 disaster, Heresy should launch in a safe state to ensure players are not removed from the game. Revenant has several unavailable items or features that have yet to be addressed, such as Warlock Exotic Ballidorse Wrathweavers gloves being disabled after a boss melt bug or Hunter Super was found Shadowshot: Deadfall not being usable in Vesper's Host.

The Dawning 2024's State Means Episode 3 Needs a Big Win

Dawning 2024's weapon baking and focus issues make it borderline unplayable for many fans, and with Bungie closing up shop for the holidays, it's likely that some bugs will remain in the game throughout the event. Between the previous issues and the current one, community morale is more on the low side, and Heresy would need to be a win before Frontiers to get the hype going. Conversely, if Heresy launches in a similar state to the Revenant and Dawning event, it may leave a very low active player base before Frontiers.

What follows is that Heresy is in the unfortunate position of having little time to ship in a fully polished state once it exists. Destiny 2 The Revenant bugs are fixed, but it's needed to better pave the way for Frontiers. One of the issues Bungie listed during the layoff situation was that not many players pre-ordered The Final Shape, and this may continue with Frontiers if morale remains low and the game's major game-breaking issues are not addressed.

Why Destiny 2's Heresy Episode Can't Miss the Mark

Given that Destiny 2Oryx Episode 3 will mark the return of The Dreadnaught, Oryx's ship, after many years of Destiny 1 debut, he already has a lot riding on his shoulders. The Revenant storyline also caused some fan displeasure over Eramis being freed by the Guardian, so it's important that the Heresy plot falls flat on his feet.

Hive themed releases for Destiny 2 tend to do well with fans due to the importance of the faction in the game's universe, and returning to The Dreadnaught to take control of it could be an interesting turn of events. With plenty of Hive-themed armor and weapons, Heresy has a chance to make itself heard Destiny 2The Witch Queen expansion, which was another very important point for the franchise. All of this would be felt even more if Heresy manages to launch in a good state with little to no bugs, but that remains to be seen.

Destiny 2's Heresy episode will see the Guardians take control of the Dreadnaught thanks to Bungie's featured flagship armor. It also makes sense after the Revenant saw the destruction of the HELM.
