Even without Newton's cookbook, BO6 Zombies' Gobblegum can be better

while Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies has seen some major highs and lows in Season 1, such as the release of Citadelle Des Morts and the brief removal of camo farming in Directed mode, the mode remains very strong overall. In many ways, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies is exactly what players have been asking for after several years of controversial changes, as its round-based maps offer strong survival gameplay and plenty of lines to find. The game also feels like a marriage between the modern innovations of Black Ops Cold War and the lover Black Ops 3 thanks to the return of items like Gobblegum, though it's that aspect of the game that can still be improved.

To be clear, Gobblegum's implementation in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies is solid. Players can hold three Gobblegums at once, pick up a free gum each round, and have a chance to get any Gobblegum in the game at random every 8-10 rounds. Small post-launch touches have also added a bit of polish to the system, from Gobblegum's cleaner HUD portion to players appearing with the first three gummies in the pack. In Black Ops 6Gobblegums feel powerful but not overpowering and can be earned consistently without players having to spend COD points. However, getting the exact Gobblegums players want is less straightforward, which is why it's a shame there's no Newton's Cookbook in Black Ops 6. However, an alternative could fill the gap provided by the Cookbook.

January 28 is going to be a big day for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 fans

Call of Duty players will want to mark January 28th on their calendars as Treyarch confirms something big for Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

What was Newton's cookbook in Black Ops 3?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3Newton's Cookbook feature essentially allowed players to trade some of the Gobblegums for more desirable ones. For example, if players had a bunch of Killing Time and Temporal Gift gummies, but none of the game-changing Perkaholics, they could trade a few of the former for one of the latter, giving them a chance to get exactly what they want. The three recipes on offer changed daily, giving players a reason to log in every day and giving even the least favorite Gobblegums a purpose. When a particularly good recipe appeared, it felt like an event, with Call of duty Zombie fans jump at the opportunity to collect as many of the rare gums as possible.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Newton's Cookbook will return Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 for the sole reason that Gobblegums are the main way Zombie mode is monetized. Players can purchase gum packs with COD points, and the gums appear in battle passes, paid packs, and through Prestige progression. Adding a Newton's cookbook would push players away from buying Gobblegum packs as they could just grind random Gobblegums to trade them for the ones they want when the right recipe comes up. Because of this, Activision would be against bringing back Newton's cookbook as it could cut off a source of revenue, so improving Gobblegum would require a different approach.

As more Gobblegums are added, it will only be harder to get the ones players want, as each rarity will be expanded with more potential drops.

How could Black Ops 6 improve on Gobblegum without Newton's cookbook?

While Newton's Cookbook was returning to Black Ops 6 Zombies can be a dream, there are other ways Treyarch can make it easier for players to get the gummies they're looking for without spending real money or hoping for good RNG. These options include:

  • Trade with Gum Gum: Perhaps the simplest solution is to allow players to share their Gobblegum with their friends, just like they would a mystery box weapon. Meeeing with the machine after a gum has been spat out could allow other players to pick it up.
  • Gobblegum spins: Something like Dr. Monty's Factory would be great to see in Black Ops 6. While it would likely be monetized through paid spins, with only one daily spin being free, allowing players to have another way to earn Gums would be beneficial.
  • Gobblegum Rewards: Treating Gobblegum as rewards could be an interesting opportunity for Treyarch. That Call of Duty: Warzoneplayers could be awarded medals based on their performance in a match, with gums tied to each medal. For example, most door purchases might offer gummies like Wall-to-Wall Clearance to save money for generous players on future rounds, while most revivals might offer items like Phoenix Up and Nowhere But There.

Regardless of which path it takes, it would be great to see Treyarch refine their existing Gobblegum system. While Gobblegum is not mandatory and can be won frequently enough that the current format is not considered pay-to-win, it is too tedious for players to get the exact Gobblegums they are looking for right now. This can be particularly frustrating since certain gums are required for things like camo challenges, so hopefully a further expansion of Black Ops 6Gobblegum's is planned.
