James Gunn ushers in a new era for superhero franchises as DC Universe dives headfirst into “Chapter One: God and Monsters.” Hoping to recapture the world-building magic of Phase One of the MCU, the DCU is officially off the starting blocks with Creature Commando. Along with a cartoon featured in Creature Commando” opening credits, there was already the surprise appearance of the DCU's own unofficial mascot.
While there is some confusion as to which parts of the old DCEU will be brought into the new canon, Creature Commando has already been linked to pacifier and The suicide squad. Gunn's adult animation also revived a throwaway Easter egg from the DCU's not-so-distant cousin. Just like Disney has Mickey Mouse and McDonald's has Ronald McDonald, it looks like the Ultrabunny has cemented itself as the mascot of the DCU.

Despite the wealth of potential projects the new DCU could run in the first few years, James Gunn believes they'll keep them to themselves.
Who is Ultrabunny?
As a fluffy-eared rabbit holding a sign, Ultrabunny first appeared in 2022. The suicide squad but he officially appeared in DCU canon thanks to a blink-and-you'll-miss-him nod. Creature Commando episode 2. “The Tourmaline Necklace” on December 5 filled in the past of Indira Varma's bride and her tragic story with Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour). As the episode went through history and the Bride's many confrontations with Eric, a flashback to the 90s showed him wearing a black Ultrabunny t-shirt.
Gunn told BBC Radio 1 in 2021 how Ultrabunny started as a joke to put Rick Flag Jr. of Joel Kinnaman in a Wile E. Coyote comic t-shirt for The suicide squad. Although Warner Bros. also owns the Looney Tunes characters, Gunn says the studio was concerned about splashing the iconic cartoon character with blood. Additionally, he said he feels a little “weird” including the character:
“If it was Mickey Mouse it would be fine, or if it was Wile E. and we made a Disney movie, I'd be fine, but making a Warner Bros. movie. with Wile E., I felt a little weird. Plus, I'm working on a movie with Wile E., so it's like all these different things came together and I just wasn't sure about it.”
Instead, Gunn created Ultrabunny and has since shared his original drawing (seen above). With Ultrabunny working as a stand-in for Wile E. Coyote, fans might notice some similarities, such as the pair holding funny signs. For the original design, Gunn considered sayings like “the future is checkered” and “Elvis to the rescue” before deciding “obstacles are opportunities.”
Similar to how Invincible comics have Science Dog and the Amazon animated series had Seance Dog (blame rights issues), Ultrabunny is a fictional character that exists in the DCU world, such as The Ichy & Scratchy Show in The Simpsons. Gunn promoted the importance of Ultrabunny, posting on Threads and telling fans:
Ultrabunny is one of the most famous cartoon characters in the DCU world. Also appeared in Peacemaker.
The fact that Gunn said “one of the most famous” suggests that there are other cartoon characters. Has Gunn already designed his own team of anthropomorphic animal world superheroes? At least the audience knows Superman, and the rest of us would like to relax with the wacky cartoons after a hard day saving the world.
Observant viewers have noticed how Eric Frankenstein's Ultrabunny T-shirt is different from the one worn by Rick Flag Jr. in The suicide squad. Back then, Flag transformed into a yellow t-shirt with Ultrabunny holding a sign that read “obstáculos son opportunidades”. (This is Spanish for “obstacles are opportunities”). The character made an unexpected comeback when Evan Calcaterra (Lenny Jacobson) wore an Ultrabunny T-shirt in pacifier season 1, while there is an Ultrabunny action figure on the hood of Vigilante's (Freddie Stroma) car. Ultrabunny appears in Creature Commando further ties together the DCU canon.

James Gunn gives the best explanation yet for how Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are DCU Canon
Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are “mostly” canon for the DCU reboot, and James Gunn has offered a new explanation for how it works.
The DCU already has its own mascot
Ultrabunny is a mystery, with his name and outfit suggesting that he at least has some sort of superpower. There's also the gag for which his catchphrase was the production catchphrase The suicide squad. Whether Gunn even gave him a backstory remains to be seen, but with fans seeming to respond well to his inclusion, Ultrabunny has the potential to become a DCU character of his own. It also sounds like a great opportunity for merchandising – just look at how popular it is The MandalorianGrogu's became.
“Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” is expected to be the first part of an ever-expanding DCU that will add some of the weird and wonderful characters that the DCEU never got to include, as well as some brand new creations. Creature Commando wasted no time in nodding to the world at large with David Corenswet's Superman, at least to get a mention before the end credits roll. Given Ultrabunny's popularity, he's expected to appear in many other characters' fashions, but what if he's meant for more?
Beyond the already packed chapter one, Ultrabunny could appear in a project of his own. Even though a full-on Ultrabunny movie seems unlikely after Warner Bros. scrapped the model led by Wile E. Coyote Coyotes vs. Acme after it was completed, Gunn's mention of its popularity suggests he has a plan. Also, if Gunn can also bring the right project to Warner Bros., an Ultrabunny outing could fill that Coyote-shaped hole. If not, a series in the meaning Creature Commando could work too.
There are undoubtedly far more important characters to worry about, like the casting of Batman for God and Monsters, as well as hopeful arrivals of fan favorites like Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman below . Even if Ultrabunny is never more than a joke cartoon that Gunn made because he couldn't use Wile E. Coyote, he could become a recurring Easter egg like Pixar's iconic Pizza Planet trucks. Still, imagine what Gunn could do with his own badass take on a Justice League animal tribute.
