Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Devs Comment on Cloud, Aerith, Tifa Love Triangle

The developers behind it Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shared some thoughts on the well-known love triangle between series protagonist Cloud and party members Tifa and Aerith. The trio has generated debate since the original Final Fantasy VII released in the 1990s, and even now, players of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be quite passionate about it.

Although it is well known that Aerith meets a bad end in Final Fantasy VIIplayers however looked at the chemistry Cloud has with both Aerith and Tifa and argued over which was a better match. The bittersweet nature of Cloud and Aerith's relationship became even more intense after its release Final Fantasy 7 Advent Childrenand Redo it and Renaissance versions leaned into it even more. Now, two of the game developers are discussing the well-known love triangle.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth won Game Rant's first Community GOTY Award, with fans praising its narrative, gameplay and emotional impact.

In a recent interview with Inverse, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase as well FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi, talked about the game and the complex relationship between the characters. One topic he focused on was the new set scenes between Cloud and Aerith where they go on a “date” in a dream or alternate reality. Hamaguchi said that the scene can have “many interpretations”, possibly referring to some players considering it canon to their love relationship, while others disagreed and felt that Tifa was a better choice for Cloud. Hamaguchi notes that Aerith is a “kind of sisterly character” to Cloud who understands his fate and uses this opportunity to help Cloud fulfill his destiny.

Final Fantasy 7's Cloud is a 'Lucky Guy'

While Hamaguchi seemed to indicate a more sibling-like relationship between Aerith and Cloud, Kitase joked after Hamaguchi's comment that “Cloud is deeply thought of by two different women. What a lucky guy.” Fan shippers will be rooting for this line as it seems to point to the romance potential between Cloud and Aerith or Tifa. However, it is worth noting that Kitase was the director of the original Final Fantasy VII. Perhaps the difference in commentary between Hamaguchi and Kitase indicates how the story and angle of the seventh entry in the franchise has changed and evolved over time.

Regardless of who fans think is right for Cloud, over 20 years after the original title's release, it's clear that gamers are still passionate about the subject. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Aerith has on the third game in Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy and whether it continues to shake their relationship.
