French footballer Alexis Beka Beka was “safe and sound” after being discovered in a “state of distress” on Friday, emergency services said.
The 22-year-old midfielder was cared for by police and firefighters after a reported suicide attempt. “He is safe and sound,” said a police spokesman.
Jean-Pierre Rivere, president of Nice, said the club was relieved by the outcome.
“Everything ended well for Alexis who was in a state of distress this morning,” said Rivere in a statement.
“He has been taken care of. We will continue to respect medical confidentiality and we ask everyone to do the same and respect his privacy.
“We and the entire club are supporting him.”
Beka Beka, who featured for France at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, joined Nice in August 2022 from Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia for 12 million euros.
He is under contract with the French side until June 2027.
Lens striker Elye Wahi told Amazon Sport before his match against Strasbourg: “I would like to spare a thought for my friend Alexis Beka Beka, who has just experienced a complicated situation. I thought about him a lot before the match.”
Strasbourg player Fred Guilbert said: “I am truly saddened to learn that a young footballer wanted to end his life. Mental health is important and it’s crucial we support those who need it. We all need to be kind and considerate to others.
“Earning lots of money, being popular isn’t a sign of ultimate happiness.
“Behind each player there is a man with his strengths and weaknesses. I sincerely hope he can find the help and support he needs to get through this.”
Beka Beka’s Nice take on Brest in France’s Ligue 1 at 12am on Monday morning AEST.
Nice are currently second on the Ligue 1 table.
