Of course, after enduring all the abuse he did, Shoto could have easily become a villain just like Toya, but his kind heart made sure he never lost sight of what he truly wanted and that he has become a hero to be proud of.

Shoto Todoroki's incredible potential in My Hero Academia
- Shoto is the Half-Cold Half-Hot user
- Shoto is one of the strongest professional heroes
At the end of My Hero Academia, fans were directly hinted that Shoto and Bakugo were neck and neck in their upbringing. They were both fighting for the top spots in the Hero rankings when they became Pro Heroes, while Deku was in the UA, teaching the students and leading them on a new path. However, at the time, fans weren't exactly sure of Shoto's hero status. It was revealed that Shoto could eventually get ahead of Bakugo, which was simply due to his better character. He has been found to be doing a lot of public service events and really takes care of all his fans. Shoto's kind-hearted nature and good character ensured that he surpassed Bakugo in the hero rankings, while the latter actually fell.
I want to be a hero too! – Shoto Todoroki
In the epilogue of My Hero Academia, it was revealed that Bakugo's hero ranking, although he started at #4, had dropped to #15, making him one of the most tragic Pro Heroes fans have seen in recent times . Of course, the hero ranking doesn't take anything away from his strength, and Bakugo is still one of the strongest heroes in Japan, if not the strongest.
Back to Shoto Todoroki, fans weren't surprised to hear that he was fighting for the top spots. Shoto has the power of the Half-cold Half-Hot Quirk, which was born from the Quirk Marriage of Enji Todoroki and Rei. This Quirk is extremely powerful, where one half perfectly balances the other. The hot flames of rage are quenched by the cold, icy effect of the Ice Quirk. This essentially made Shoto nearly invincible in battle, provided he mastered his powers. As seen in the Final War Saga of My hero academyShoto was able to master the powers of his Quirk and came up with Phosphor, one of his strongest moves where he properly used both halves and brought out their full potential. It was clear for fans to see that as he mastered Phosphor, he would become one of the most powerful heroes to ever live. Since then, Shoto has grown tremendously, which explains his current hero rank.

Deku and Ochaco's relationship is eventually confirmed by Horikoshi. They are officially together.
Shoto's power continues to grow, and since he hasn't been a pro hero for too long, fans will see him steadily grow stronger over the years and potentially claim even higher ranks. But unlike his father, Shoto is not driven by the desire to be number one. He recognizes the power he has and at the same time believes that the most important thing is for him to have a smile on his face and save as many people as possible. He is the complete opposite of his father and therefore being the second best hero in Japan doesn't make much of a difference to him as long as he keeps his confidence in himself and his abilities.
I realized that I like to eat food! – Shoto
At the same time, fans got to see Shoto get in touch with his non-hero side. Shoto seems to have been driven by his responsibilities as a Hero over the years. But now is the time for him to change that. After his many encounters with Toya before his death, Shoto realized that one of his favorite things was enjoying good food. As such, Shoto takes an interest in this hobby and travels to parts of Japan for classes to get in touch with this side of him and not neglect his personal hobbies. Clearly, Shoto's character growth is absolutely impeccable, at least and fans are excited to see him where he is now.
Can Shoto Todoroki outlast Mirio Togata?
Shoto has the potential to be #1
As for Shoto's potential, fans know he has yet to fully fulfill it. Of course, Shoto claiming second rank on the Hero Top is impressive, but fans don't know what level he really is right now because he hasn't been seen in battle. Eventually, Shoto will have to show himself more in major fights, and when that happens, maybe he will have a better chance to rise even higher. Right now, Shoto is going head to head with Mirio Togata for the position of Top One Hero.
Mirio still holds that rank and will likely hold it for some time. But, there is an absolutely high chance that Shoto will reserve this rank and become Japan's greatest hero of the current era. But, Shoto is at a point where he is content with who he is and how he lives his life, both as a hero and as a normal human. Rankings don't matter to him, but they certainly excite the fans.
