Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Should you defeat or reason with the First Warden?

The First Warden proves a difficult ally for Rook to recruit in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, so players are left with a choice as to how best to deal with him.

How to find The Warden Vault

Players will need to enlist the help of Rook's incoming companion, Taash, to open the Warden's Vault. Fortunately, you won't be able to miss the opportunity to recruit her, as The Warden Vault is found on the Rivian coastin the same location where players first meet Taash. It is recommended that you follow and complete the initial mission with her, as her skills as a companion will make opening the vault much easier.

From the fast travel point in the northeast corner of the map (as indicated above), players will find themselves in front of an iron gate. If you have already been behind it and opened it, then you can easily proceed to the vault. However, if this is your first visit, you should venture down the path to the right of the gate until you find a red vase in front of a stone wall. Use Taash's fire breath to blow up this vase and proceed through the hole in the wall he created.

Once through the wall, continue to the other side of the clearing and up the stairs. On the next floor, you'll come across a closed door to the right that you can go through. From there, go down the stairs and immediately follow the stairs on the right that go down. You'll need to defeat an enemy blocking the entrance, as well as use Taash's fire breath to melt the Drakestone in the archway. Once you break free, simply follow the path below until you find the entrance to the Warden's Vault.

How to open the first lock of the guardian safe

To open the Warden Vault, players will need to open three locks throughout the island. The first of which is relatively easy to find and only requires you to retrace your steps. To find it, players should go back the way they came until they reach the wall that Taash blew up. You can go in the opposite direction to where you came, or you can go back up the previous ladder and pull the lever to open the gate. This will give you access to the fast travel point and make it a little easier to get to the first lock solution.

From the hole in the wall, take a left (instead of going straight to the stairs) and into the next room, which is full of crates and other wooden objects. Use Rook's attacks or rolling ability to break all the wood and reveal the wall with three shields on it. You will need to light the three shields by interacting with them to open the first lock. To unlock the first Warden Vault lock, interact with the shields in this order: left, middle, then right.

Once all three shields are lit, go back up the stairs and through the door. On the opposite side of the platform (where the lever is), you'll find another small gate next to the same three shield symbols. Now that you've completed the puzzle, all the shields here will also be lit, allowing you to pull the lever to raise the gate. This will give you access to the room where you'll find a chest, some Imperial Weave, and the lever to unlock the first Warden Vault lock.

How to unlock the second lock of the guardian vault

For the second Warden Vault lock, players will need to find and follow a spirit to various locations. To find the original spirit, go down the ladder again to the main clearing, then venture straight ahead and go through the door on the far right. If this is your first time going this way, you'll have to deal with a few enemies first. Once through the door, you'll reach a small courtyard where you'll find the remains of a body with green butterflies around it. Approach the body and interact with it and the spirit will appear, before floating through the wall.

To find the second skeleton location, return to the hole in the wall and go up the stairs again. Instead of taking a left to enter the building, turn right and go around the corner. You will find the second body in the corner, which you will need to approach the skeleton to move the spirit.

For the third skeleton, simply go back down the stairs and through the hole in the wall. In the next room, you'll find the corpse hidden in the corner. This will encourage the spirit to move on again to the final body.

To get to the final body, go through the large gate (or go back up the stairs and into the main room) and go back to the door where the first body was. As you enter the room, you will notice a significant green glow where you will find the spirit standing there. Walk up to the spirit and it will disappear, revealing a hidden door containing the lever for the second Warden Vault lock.

How to unlock the third lock of the guardian safe

From the second lock's lever, players must head to the left exit and through the courtyard where the first body is to begin the process of opening the third lock. Continue through the courtyard, take the door on the left, through the door on the right, then across the room and through the door next to the painting.

Follow the path down the stairs until you reach a well-lit clearing, where you'll need to take the door on the right, right again. Through here, you'll find a training dummy in the middle of the room, as well as a door blocked by a Drakestone. Use Taash to free this door, then continue until you find the locked door and the corpse. Rook will comment that they need a Wisp to animate the skeleton.

To get the Wisp, retrace your steps and turn right to go outside. There is a giant statue that some enemies are patrolling, but you can miss them if you want. When you get outside, look to the right and up, where you'll find a red explosive vase. Use Taash to blow up, then go up the ladder on the left. On the opposite side of the platform, you'll find the Wisp. Simply get close enough for him to follow you, then lead him back to the skeleton. Once there, Wisp will pick it up and pull the lever for you. Through the door is a Memento, a chest, and the lever for the third Warden Vault lock. Once opened, you can return to the vault and claim its contents.
