With The vessel of hate DLC and the sixth Diablo 4 Season, world levels have been removed from the game. In their place is a new one Diablo 4 Difficulty system, one that is essentially separated into two halves. During leveling and most of the pre-game content, you have four basic difficulties to choose from.

Each Runeword in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred requires the creation of two Runes: Ritual Runes or Triggers and Summoning Runes or Effects.

The second half of the eight difficulties comprises the Torment system intended for players passing through Diablo 4his endgame. Entering Torment 1 offers huge bonuses at the cost of more enemy damage and less resistances. But to unlock Torment Difficulty 1, Diablo 4 players have to meet a relatively tough challenge, especially if you're not ready for the sharp spike in difficulty that Torment 1 presents.

When you level up in difficulty in Diablo 4you'll earn more XP, gold, and a higher chance of getting rarer items. When you start a new character after the difficulty updates introduced with Diablo 4: Vessel of Hateyou'll start with only two options available: Normal and Hard. As you progress through the game and complete the base and DLC campaigns, you'll unlock the following two difficulties: Elite and Penitent. As the game gets harder, the rewards get significantly better, but until you unlock the Torment system, you won't be able to get the best quality items in Diablo 4.

When you unlock Torment 1, Diablo 4 ups the ante significantly – the jump from Penitent to Torment 1 should not be underestimated. But to raise the difficulty, Diablo 4 players will not only get much more XP and gold from enemies, but they will also be able to earn Ancestral gear – the highest quality gear in the game.

There is one downside, aside from enemies being stronger and smarter: you have less armor and stamina on Torment difficulty. You actually take a flat -250 to your armor value and a 25% reduction to all your resistances. This, along with the increased enemy difficulty, makes it a huge jump from the Penitent difficulty – and the higher Torments make it even harder.

Diablo 4's Runeword system is different from previous iterations and allows players to create custom trigger and effect abilities.

While you can get legendary, unique, and mythic uniques before you unlock Torment 1, the chance of these types of special items dropping increases significantly once you pass that threshold. So if you plan to farm some of the rarest items in the game, you'll need to make sure you're at least on Torment 1 difficulty.

How to unlock Torment 1 difficulty in Diablo 4

To unlock Torment Difficulty 1, you must first beat the main campaign for Diablo 4 to unlock Elite Difficulty, the third of the “regular” difficulties. Then fill in The vessel of hate main campaign to unlock Penitent Difficulty. Once you've reached Level 60 and have some Paragon Points allocated, look in the Quests tab for the priority quest “Artificer's Pit”.

Go to Cerrigar in Scosglen and go to the very top left of the Waypoint to find the Artificer's Obelisk. This is your entryway to the Artificer's Pit, a repeatable randomized dungeon with a hundred levels to grind. When you maxed out in Diablo 4Level 20 in The Pit will be the highest level you can take. This is your first taste of Torment Difficulty.

To unlock Torment Difficulty for the rest of the game, you must defeat The Pit at level 20. You have 15 minutes to defeat enough enemies to create a portal that leads to the final boss. Defeat the boss within the time limit to complete the Pit at level 20 and unlock Torment Difficulty 1 in Diablo 4.

Afterwards, Chin Difficulties do not increase the quality of the rewards, only their abundance. To unlock higher levels of torment difficulty, you must keep pushing The Pit to higher and higher levels. Because you can get everything you can in Torment 1 through Torment 4, and because of the massive increase in difficulty between Torment levels, it's best to stick with Torment 1 until you feel like your build is complete.
