Bridgetown/St. George: Hurricane Beryl strengthened to a maximum Category 5 storm on Monday night after battering several islands in the southeastern Caribbean, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds. Beryl is now the earliest Category 5 Atlantic storm on record and has developed into a “potentially catastrophic” hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
