This is not due to Gojo himself, but the decisions the author made with this character on various occasions.
Fans weren't particularly happy with Gojo's ending, but for what it's worth, it certainly adds a unique flavor to his character now that JJK it's officially over.
Gojo's role in Jujutsu Kaisen's Final Arc
- Gojo was unsealed in the cutting game
- Gojo faced death at the hands of Sukuna
Gojo has played an absolutely significant role in JJK since the beginning. He was the character who started things after allowing Yuji to live from consuming Sukun's finger. Gojo was proclaimed the most powerful immediately, and his power allowed him to lead a revolution. It was clear to fans from the very beginning of the series that Gojo planned a revolution and wanted to change the superiors in charge of the Jujutsu society. To do this, he needed strong allies, and that is precisely why he became a teacher and raised the younger generation. Of course, Gojo took the likes of Megumi, Yuji, and Nobara under his wing, and with his incredible skills in Jujutsu, Gojo trained them well. Whatever they have achieved to this day is due to Gojo and that certainly shows how great a teacher Gojo really was.
Don't worry! After all I am the strongest! – Gojo
However, Gojo's role in JJK goes beyond that of a teacher. Gojo was absolutely phenomenal as a fighter, especially since he was the strongest modern wizard. Given that he had the power of both the Limitless Cursed Technique and the Six Eyes, Gojo was absolutely unstoppable and the only one who could fight Sukuna on an even footing. This was seen in the final arc of JJK, after Gojo was successfully unsealed in the events of the Culling Game. Gojo was unsealed and immediately after that the date for his fight against Sukuna was set.
When the Shinjuku Showdown vs. Sukuna finally started, fans got to witness this fight and it sure was an absolutely stunning one. It's safe to say that this fight put all other JJK fights to shame and to this day remains the most intense fight not only JJK but all manga as a whole. That being said, the conclusion of this fight was definitely not satisfying for the readers. While Gojo controlled the fight for a significant portion of the time, Sukuna also had his moments and eventually managed to surprise the strongest modern wizard with a newly learned technique.
Thanks to the 10 Shadow Technique, which he had access to thanks to Megumi, Sukuna was able to go through Gojo's Infinity and essentially kill him in one hit, splitting his body in two. Gojo finally died in JJK chapter 236, and his incredible journey as a wizard has finally come to an end. Gojo wouldn't have lost to Sukuna the way he did if the TenShadows Technique wasn't a factor. In fact, Gojo may not have lost the battle at all, considering that he had total control of the battlefield until the moment he lost, which happened in the blink of an eye. The fight could have gone much more in Gojo's favor if Megumi's body wasn't a tool for Sukuna to use, but at the end of the day, Gojo lost, and with it, his life ended .
Gojo's End in Jujutsu Kaisen
Gojo's legacy was his beloved students
The loss of Gojo led to his death and at the same time, fans were absolutely not ready to see Gojo finally die.
Gojo's death was not accepted by the fandom in general, and that wasn't just because fans weren't ready to let go of the phenomenon, but because there were actual hints in the story for Gojo to return. In fact, many characters who faced a similar fate to Gojo, such as Yuta Okkotsu and even Higuruma, somehow managed to survive through various means. If it was possible for them, if the author wanted Gojo to return, it certainly would have been possible for him. But, Gojo definitely didn't come back and his ending in JJK was basically just that.
I want you to develop a different kind of strength than mine. – Gojo
Sukuna killed Gojo and that was the end of him. Of course, Gojo appeared in many flashbacks even after his death, almost being present in almost every chapter until the end. But what fans found absolutely bizarre was that no one really paid tribute to Gojo after his death. Gojo was the most influential character in JJK and deeply affected the lives of almost every individual in the series. However, Gojo was never given a funeral, nor was he even spoken of by the characters in the first place.
Of course, in the last chapter, the conversation between Yuji and Gojo was revealed to the fans, but that was definitely not enough. Even people like Yuta among many others who were dear to Gojo should have done more and Gege definitely dropped the ball on that. Gege should have honored the biggest character in his entire series more than he did and at least give him the respect he deserved.
Funeral aside, Gojo never fulfilled his dream with his own hands. Gojo wanted to change the world, and while his students certainly helped in that, it would have been great to have been alive to witness it. Gojo ended up entrusting everything to the next generation, and that was certainly a silver lining. But at the same time, he couldn't give Suguru a proper burial, which he desperately wanted. Furthermore, the question of whether Gojo was the strongest because of his personality or if he acted the way he did because he was the strongest was left unanswered until the end. It's something fans desperately wanted to see highlighted following his return, which was theorized by many but ultimately didn't materialize.
Was Gojo's ending good?
Gojo's ending was a mixed bag for most fans
All in all, Gojo's ending was pretty average, but it definitely could have been better, especially if the author had killed him off properly by tying up all the loose ends and having his character a bit more than it was There's no denying the possibility that a return would have made his character even worse, but at least it would have given the author a chance to tie up all the loose ends with this character and reveal him properly. If Gege had done that before killing him, the fans wouldn't have had as many complaints as they did. Gojo's ending could definitely have been better, but at the end of the day, it wasn't the worst in the series either.
The final chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
