My Happy Marriage Season 1: A gender-bending romance
With its remarkable approach to genres, My Happy Marriage has proven to be one of the best romance anime in recent years.
Season two is premiere scheduled for January 6, 2025and will likely be added to Netflix at the same time as the first season.
A story like Cinderella
My happy marriage struck the hearts of fans with its historical setting, supernatural themes and a Cinderella-like story. The story is set in the Taisho era (1912-1926) and follows Miyo Saimori, who is forced into slavery by her abusive stepmother. Dreaming that this nightmare will end when she gets married, Miyo soon learns that her fiancee arranged by the family is Kiyoka Kudou, who is known to be cold and cruel. After moving into his house, Miyo begins to discover that her future husband might not be such a monster.
The anime is based on the novel of the same name written by Akumi Agitogi. It was first self-published online in Japan and was later acquired by Kadokawa in 2019. Since then eight volumes have been released under the Fushimi Shobo label, all illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka. Yen Press publishes the books in the US.
A manga adaptation by Rito Kohsaka is also ongoing as of 2018, with five volumes so far. Square Enix publishes the manga in both Japan and the US. A live-action film was released exclusively in Japanese theaters in March 2023.
Where to watch and what's next
My happy marriage premiered last year on July 5, and the first season ended with 12 episodes on September 20, 2023. Netflix is streaming the series, with subtitled and dubbed options. Episodes were added simultaneously upon their release in Japan.
A special episode premiered on Netflix last month. Despite being labeled as “episode 13”, it is actually an OVA originally released in Japan in March as part of a special bundle for the novel's 8th volume. It's worth noting that Netflix doesn't usually acquire rights to stream content originally intended to be available only to buyers of special bundle volumes – however, it's too early to know if this is just an exception or if it could mean that Netflix is taking a different approach to anime.
Netflix has already confirmed that it will stream the new episodes.
