Obsidian tells fans to watch out for the “swindler” looking at an employee

Summary

  • An Obsidian worker opened a Twitter account impersonating an employee of the studio.

  • The account has nearly 1,000 followers and claims to be a “PR agent” at Obsidian. It looks like they are trying to trick content creators.

  • He shared many posts related to Obsidian, including those making hateful comments against the company and its games.

An Obsidian community manager is telling fans to beware of scammers, as one appears to be looking at a studio employee. While it's unclear why the account owner claims to work at Obsidian, their description mentions that they want to work with “awesome creators,” suggesting that they're trying to rip off content creators.

However, the account's posting history is also bizarre, as they have shared many posts that are anti-DEI and make derogatory remarks against Obsidian. These posts were made as Obsidian's next game, Avowed, became the latest target of the “anti-awakening” movement on social media, just like Dragon Age: The Veilguard before it and The Witcher 4 after.

Fans and content creators are told to watch out for scammers

“Be aware of scammers,” says Aarik Dorobial, senior community manager at Obsidian. “This person does not work for us and we have no idea who they are.”

True, there is no sign that Jake Mitchell works for Obsidian. The account is still active at the time of writing and has 933 followers. He claims to be a PR agent for Obsidian and is “always looking for amazing creators”.

As for their posts, it's a mixed bag. Many of the posts, especially the older ones, make hateful comments against Obsidian, label Avowed “woke” and even encourage others to boycott the game. However, there are also a lot of neutral and positive posts about the shared studio, so this could just be a bot sharing anything to do with Obsidian.

Could Avowed be the next Skyrim?

I guess being the next Skyrim is more about your game being in the right place at the right time, but the game still needs to be able to deliver the goods. Do you think Avowed seems to have what it takes?

Of course, given the current climate, some have assumed that the account was created to fan the flames of the culture war and hate campaign that several developers and studios are facing right now. While this may be the case, especially since developer social media posts are often brought into the mix, sharing anti-DEI posts would give the game away a bit. So it is also very possible that they are sharing something related to Obsidian and are actually trying to scam content creators with fake partnership offers.

We will have to wait and see if the account is removed or if the owner deleted it. However, it is at least summoned by Obsidian, whatever its purpose.
