Pokemon TCG Pocket's Mew ex battles against Pikachu Ex

Summary

  • Mew ex expected to shine with the Genome Hacking move, copying the opponent's attack for three energy.

  • Mew ex struggles against former Pikachu's Circle Circuit due to the Electric-type damage spec.

  • Mew ex's utility is hindered without an Electric-type Pokemon in the deck, effectively rendering it useless in certain matchups.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket has just undergone its first major transformation. The release of the Mythical Island expansion saw a Celebi ex and Serperior deck become prominent, while other cards like Aerodactyl ex and Tauros also got some time in the spotlight.

Before the release of the set, one card in particular caught the attention of players – Mew ex. Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after launch, some players are discovering that it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Pokemon Pocket's Mew Ex trading card game has a fatal flaw

Mew ex is expected to gain major popularity in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket meta due to its Genome Hacking move. For three energy, Mew ex can “choose one of your opponent's active Pokemon's attacks and use it as this attack.” This effectively means it can use former Mewtwo's four energy/150 damage Psydrive or former Charizard's four energy/200 damage Crimson Storm for three energy, annihilating both Pokemon.

Unfortunately, it's not as useful against one of the other meta cards in the game – Pikachu ex.

Former Pikachu's Circle Circuit has been a mainstay since the launch of TCG Pocket, dealing 30 damage for every Electric-type Pokemon on the bench. It's a great move for Pikachu, but not so much for the former Mew to mimic.

You see, Circle Circuit specifies that damage is dealt based on the Electric-type Pokemon on the bench. Since the former Mew's Genome Hacking copies the opposition's attack directly, unless it has benched electric types, it won't do any damage. The fact that it would cost three energy to pull off a two-energy move is bad enough, but its reliance on having Electric-type Pokemon means that unless you're running an Electric deck, it's effectively useless.

It's a very specific use case, but given the continued prominence of former Pikachu in the Pokemon TCG Pocket meta, it's definitely something to be aware of. Like the fact that Dragon-type Pokemon only got one new card in Mythical Island, and Steel-types got zero.
