For 25 years, people around the globe have been happily entertained by the strange adventures of sponges living in a pineapple under the sea, SpongeBob SquarePants. Over 300 episodes of the hit Nickelodeon animated series have told the story of the undersea fry chef and his friends, but SpongeBob SquarePants' adventures were not limited to television. Multiple movies, TV spinoffs, stage adaptations, books, comics, and of course video games have kept people captivated by the snail-holding sponge over the years. However, video games based on the world of SpongeBob only seemed to dwindle dramatically in the 2010s. That is until the surprise release of several SpongeBob games in the early 2020s, including one announced for 2025.

The future of SpongeBob SquarePants in video games
While SpongeBob's recent resurgence in video games has been generally mixed, that hasn't stopped the jellyfish fan from being the star in future games. In a recent trailer, a sequel to THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios' Cosmic Shake has been teased, apparently completing a trilogy starting with Rehydrated. Little information is known about this upcoming Spongebob game, but it has a release date of 2025. This game is expected to be a third-person platformer and play similarly to both. Rehydrated and Cosmic Shake. Only a few gameplay clips were shown, showing SpongeBob walking around as a skeleton and his normal self in the dark, deep city of Rock Bottom.
As for the story, this new SpongeBob SquarePants the game appears to have the ghost of the Flying Dutchman as its main antagonist, as seen repeatedly throughout the trailer. The trailer was also titled “Official Halloween Game Trailer” and contains many scary scenes, so it could work for the Flying Dutchman to be an antagonist. A mysterious pink portal opens and pulls the buildings and buses into itself and apparently strikes the inhabitants with lightning. Bosses from previous games also appeared, such as Squidward who turned into a giant octopus and Miss Shell who appeared as a witch. Both SpongeBob and Patrick appear as little ghosts at the end of the trailer and will likely have to use these forms to help save Bikini Bottom once again.
