Summary
-
It looks like Nintendo has one more Direct planned for the Switch before focusing on the Switch 2.
-
This Direct will take place in February and will focus on what's next on the current console.
-
Nintendo traditionally holds a Direct in February every year, so another one for the current Switch would align with that.
Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 is real and coming in 2025 on Thursday, officially unveiling its next console for the first time. It looks like we'll have to wait until April 2nd for more on the games coming to the Switch 2 at launch, as Nintendo has confirmed that the new console's first Direct will take place then. Despite this long wait, it looks like Nintendo will still stick to its tradition of holding a Direct every February.
The date at the end of the Switch 2 reveal led many people to assume that more news would be coming soon. Since it was unclear what date format Nintendo used, the most logical interpretation of the date was February 4th. Unfortunately, this is not the case. According to the same person who leaked the exact date the Switch 2 would be officially revealed, a regular Direct is coming next month.

The Switch 2's Joy-Con port has fans worried about longevity
Fans are worried that the port could break easily.
Nate The Hate noted on his podcast (thanks, Gamespot) that, as has become tradition, there will be another Nintendo Direct in February. Don't expect to hear anything more about the Switch 2. Somewhat surprising, and maybe even a little funny, that even after officially unveiling its next console, Nintendo might still have a presentation that will need a disclaimer to let excited viewers know that the Direct won't include anything about the Switch 2.
Nintendo probably has another direct one planned for the Switch
Then full steam ahead with Switch 2
Nate didn't reveal what exactly will be shown during what could be the last OG Switch Direct, but there are a few games we know will be coming to Nintendo's current console. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in March, Pokemon Legends ZA will launch on Switch this year, as will Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. That is if Amazon's pre-order cancellations aren't an indicator that it will become a Switch 2 exclusive.
We also haven't heard anything about the rumored port of Kirby: Planet Robobot yet. If this leak was correct, then we can probably expect to see that game appear during a potential February Direct as well. Even though it might feel like the Switch era is coming to an end after the Switch 2 reveal, with 150 million console owners to answer to, Nintendo won't be talking about the Switch right away, regardless of whether there's a Direct from February or not.
It has also been confirmed that the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility. That means any of the games shown during a potential February Direct will be playable on the Switch 2. Don't expect a better look at the new Mario Kart game that was revealed on Thursday, though. It was almost certainly a Switch 2 exclusive that will likely launch with the console.
