- Marvel Studios can't afford to continue the Scarlet Witch story without Schaeffer's involvement in some capacity.
Wanda Maximoff's return to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) feels imminent, with Kevin Feige hinting that it's just a matter of when and how. Elizabeth Olsen will likely return in a standalone Scarlet Witch movie or possibly a second season WandaVision. But whatever the project, a Marvel Studios writer/producer should be involved – ideally in a leading role.
On her last appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessWanda sacrifices herself to destroy Mount Wundagore and destroy every copy of the Darkhold in the multiverse. Even Agatha All Along suggests that Wanda is gone for good. But in the MCU, no one is ever truly “dead,” especially with the multiverse still in play. So, imagining a book titled The Scarlet Witch Returns, who should take the reins of her next project? The answer lies in looking back at someone who managed both teams WandaVision and Agatha All Along: Jack Schaeffer.

With four episodes left in Season 1 of Disney Plus' WandaVision, showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked about the possibility of a second season.
Who should oversee all the Scarlet Witch projects now?
Marvel Studios need look no further than Jac Schaeffer for any future project involving the Scarlet Witch. As the creator of WandaVision and Agatha All AlongSchaeffer has proven her mettle, and the universal acclaim of both shows is testament to her talent. Her presence is crucial to any future film or series featuring the witch or related characters. In fact, if a standalone Scarlet Witch film is in the works, there's a strong case for Schaeffer to take over as director.
Although Wanda has been a significant presence in the franchise since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultronher arc has probably peaked WandaVisionin large part thanks to Schaeffer and her team of writers. As the lead writer and showrunner, she clearly understood the character and her potential. Schaeffer also excelled at adding other comic-related characters to the mix, such as Agatha Harkness—so much so that she went on to successfully helm the Agatha spin-off series. He also seems adept at handling the elements of magic and sorcery in the MCU, which sets up his potential for long-term involvement.
Jac Schaeffer is key to Wanda's future in the MCU
It is worth noting that Jac Schaeffer was not part of the crew for The Multiverse of Madness — and that movie, while decent, didn't do Wanda or her arc justice. This underscores how essential Schaeffer is and will be to every Wanda-focused project going forward. In fact, there's a growing buzz among fans on social media suggesting that Marvel should make her a Kevin Feige-like figure, overseeing not only the Maximoff family stories, but other key television projects as well. Many fans already see her absence from the future Vision Quest looks like a disappointment on Disney+.
Right now, even more than WandaVisionthe success of Agatha's All Along debut season is a sign of Jac Schaeffer's growing demand. She not only served as head writer for that series; she also directed three episodes, including the standout episode 7, “Death's Hand in Mine.” A stand-alone Wanda movie could bring in characters from AAAsuch as Agatha, Teen (Billy Maximoff) and Aubrey Plaza's Rio/Lady Death. It would have set them up for interesting MCU prospects like the Midnight Sons or even the Young Avengers. Not to mention, all of this could tie into the future the subsequent judgment and Secret Wars the events.
Could Schaeffer be taking on a bigger role at Marvel Studios?
Schaeffer's role in the major Avengers projects could resemble how James Gunn served as an executive producer Infinity War and The end of the gamecredit for how well he handled his Guardians of the Galaxy characters. Her track record with MCU films, as an original writer for Black Widow and her uncredited writing additions to Captain Marveldidn't get off to the best start. However, after WandaVision earned twenty-three Emmy nominations (the most for any limited series that year), Schaeffer will now likely have more authority and autonomy within Marvel Studios.
There is also the (somewhat exaggerated) potential for WandaVision to be renewed for another season if the standalone movie idea doesn't pan out. Schaeffer even commented on this in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
I can't talk about a second season. That really fits the Marvel philosophy. Kevin is so great about coming out and saying, “Here's what's going on!” up to a point. “Here is the field and here is where the field is left.” A second season is not something that can be discussed on the field yet.
The MCU is no longer the relatively simple universe it was a decade ago, when it focused on six or more Avengers and a singular threat to the planet. Now with the multiverse and a growing list of heroes and their variants, it becomes a challenge to keep track of them all. Having someone like Jac Schaeffer take creative control of a certain type of Marvel project, such as supernatural stories, could help ease Kevin Feige's burden. Regardless, the conclusion is clear: the MCU they can't afford to watch any future Scarlet Witch stories without Schaeffer's involvement in some capacity.
