Upcoming GTA-style cop game may skip PC at launch

In the future GTA– like a game precincts it might skip the computer at launch, as some recently emerging evidence suggests. Even if this were to happen, precincts is already confirmed to be coming to PC — eventually.

Developed by British studio Fallen Tree Games, precincts is an open-world action-adventure with some serious twists grand theft auto vibes, except it puts the player in the shoes of a police officer rather than a criminal. UK publisher Kwalee has officially announced precincts in June 2023, stating that the game is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Although Kwalee has said nothing about a staggered release, precinctsIts PC port might end up lagging behind its console versions. This is suggested by the recently published ESRB rating of the action adventure, reviewed by Game Rant, which does not mention PC at all. While this omission could simply be a bug, it's rare for multi-platform games to not be rated for all target platforms at once. precincts could therefore skip the PC at launch in a GTA 6– like fashion.

Precinct development may have encountered some issues of late

The prospect of a PC delay aligns with other recent developments surrounding the game; the project was originally slated for an August 2024 release, but ended up being delayed a month before that target, with Kwalee stating that precincts was rescheduled for a fall 2024 release. The game won't hit that release window either, as it was later pushed back to the first half of 2025. These delays signal that precincts may have experienced developmental difficulties and struggle to cross the finish line. Such failures are not uncommon in complex software development, especially for small independent teams. Fallen Tree Games, for example, has just six employees, according to LinkedIn data.

Another possibility is that the British studio decided to increase the scope of the project in response to the significant attention it received since the reveal. This positive buzz is evident from precinctsExisting success on Steam, where its demo was downloaded more than 100,000 times within days of its release in mid-October 2024. While increasing the scope of a project at the end of development is not unheard of, it is a more less likely for these delays than the game simply experiencing failures.

Kwalee is not yet accepting pre-orders for precincts and did not attach a specific price to the game. What is known so far is that the upcoming action-adventure is set in the fictional city of Averno in 1983, where players take on the role of a policeman determined to clean up the streets while unraveling a neo-noir story.
