Weta Workshop's Lord of the Rings experiments present a golden opportunity

In August 2022, the infamous Embracer Group bought the rights to both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbita deal that set the company back $395 million. While a few Middle-earth games have been released in recent years, fans of the fantasy franchise can expect to see a lot more in the coming years, likely spanning a surprising range of different genres.

Last year brought Return to Moria and Gollum at the table, two very different ones The Lord of the Rings titles that experimented with two very different genres, the first being a survival game while the second is a stealth adventure. Next The Lord of the Rings the game to the bat is by Weta Workshop Tales of the Countya cozy Hobbit life simulator now set for release next year. It seems any genre could be on the cards for The Lord of the Rings franchise and a hero shooter could be an interesting avenue to explore.

How a Lord of the Rings hero shooter might work

Although even just saying the words could raise issues for some fans, a The Lord of the Rings Hero shooter could work really well if done right. Throughout the three novels/films, The Lord of the Rings brings fans face-to-face with a multitude of characters, many of whom have distinct skill sets and personalities. And these being the most vital components to a good hero shooter, an Overwatch-that The Lord of the Rings the game could feel like a logical next experiment for the franchise.

A The Lord of the Rings Hero shooter already has plenty of characters that would fit the usual class archetypes of the genre. Legolas would be a ranged sniper with high agility, similar to Overwatchit's hanzo Aragorn would be a melee-focused tank, able to one-up his teammates with rousing speech. Gandalf would make a great support hero, being able to blind enemies, buff allies, and attack with his staff. And Samwise would be a good choice for a healer, giving his allies food that boosts their health. That's just scratching the surface.

A The Lord of the Rings The hero shooter would also have all the other pieces of Middle Earth fiction to pull from for its roster. The HobbitThorin Oakenshield would make a good damage hero, SilmarillionHis Morgoth would be a powerful tank, and the mysterious, oft-cut Tom Bombadil would be a really interesting support character. A The Lord of the Rings Hero shooter could even borrow characters from TV shows and video games such as Rings of Powerthe younger version of Galadriel and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordorto Talion.

It's the best and worst time to release a hero shooter

The hero shooter genre is more crowded than it's ever been. Overwatch 2 is still quite popular, Marvel Rivals made a big impression with the beta version and is scheduled for a full release in December and Valve Impasse it's already getting a lot of buzz. While a good hero shooter can become very successful right now, it needs a distinct hook that sets it apart from the competition. I agreeis the perfect example of this. Fortunately, The Lord of the Rings it has brand recognition and a fantasy niche, both of which would set it apart from the crowd.
