Woman attacked by shark in WA

A woman was attacked by a shark while snorkeling at a popular tourist spot in Western Australia.

The woman, in her 30s, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the attack off Rat Island in the Abrolhos Islands at 5.30pm on Tuesday, the ABC reported.

Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was airlifted to Geraldton Hospital for treatment.

Rat Island is about 80km off the coast of Geraldton in WA's Mid West.

It is not yet known what species of shark bit the woman.

People have been warned to be cautious at Rat Island and check the SharkSmart website or app.

Shark sightings can be reported to WA Water Police on (08) 9442 8600.
